Tax collections are up in Monroe, but employee checks are down.

Why?

The Monroe City School Board finance committee met on Tuesday, May 8, to discuss the end-of-the-year sales tax check (13th Check). The committee determined that:

•    The checks were DOWN 34% from last year.
•    Sales tax revenues were up 3.8% last year.

NO explanation was given to employees as to why their checks were drastically reduced. In fact, when employees peacefully demonstrated in the parking lot of the school board office on Wednesday, May 9, Superintendent Kathleen Harris told them:

•    She would NOT talk with employees.
•    She told employees to leave “private property.” That is PUBLIC PROPERTY!
•    She called the police.

The Monroe Federation of Teachers condemns the disrespectful and unprofessional treatment of school employees by Superintendent Kathleen Harris.

You have a right to demand an official examination! You have a right to know where taxpayer dollars are going.

The Monroe Federation of Teachers wants answers - we call on the School Board to conduct an external audit.

Don't Put Your Red "Education Proud" T- Shirts Away Yet!!

Our tenative contract settlement contract is being voted on by our membership May 30th after school. In good faith we are reinstating our cancelled activites such as walking with graduates and our end of year breakfast at the high school. Wear your red shirts to every extra school event to continue to show our unification and visibility.

Teacher Pension Shift - Maryland Special Session

The Maryland Senate has voted to shift of some of the cost of teacher pensions to Baltimore City and the state’s counties as part of an efforts to avoid more than $500 million in so-called Doomsday budget cuts originally scheduled to take effect on  July 1.

The House voted 86-51 for the that will begin splitting teacher pension costs between the state and local jurisdictions over the next four years. In the Senate, the vote on the measure that included the teacher pension shift was 33-13.

AFT-Maryland and its affiliate, the Baltimore Teachers Union, have long opposed shifting the cost of pensions to local governments.  Many local jurisdictions, such as the City of Baltimore, already suffer from budget deficits.
